01What is Stratos?
Stratos is a free ACARS client for virtual airline pilots, built by Skyvex Software. It reads Microsoft Flight Simulator, X-Plane, Prepar3D and FSX directly, tracks each flight live, scores the landing and files the PIREP to your virtual airline's own backend.
02Does Stratos work with phpVMS?
Yes. Install the free, open-source Stratos Core API and Stratos Logbook API modules into your phpVMS 7 site. They read and write phpVMS-native data, so your existing site, PIREPs and pilot records keep working as they are.
03What if our airline runs a custom backend?
Implement the open Stratos API in the stack you already run. The schema is published on the documentation site alongside a reference implementation, so you add endpoints to your backend rather than replacing it.
04Where does our flight data go?
Straight from the pilot's Stratos client to your backend. Skyvex Software receives only a small subset for the live map and usage statistics: position, flight phase, aircraft, route and the landing result, with pilots identified by first name and last initial.
05How are PIREPs filed?
Stratos builds the PIREP as the flight runs, with flight time, fuel used, distance flown and the landing report. Once you're parked, you review it and submit. Pilots can turn on auto-submit to file it as soon as the engines are off at the gate.
06Do pilots pay for Stratos?
No. The Stratos client is free for every pilot. Virtual airlines can also use Stratos free during early access.
07Which platforms does Stratos run on?
Stratos ships native builds for Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Linux (x64 and ARM). It works the same way on each one.
08What flight simulators does Stratos support?
Stratos supports Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024, X-Plane 11 and 12, Prepar3D v4/v5/v6, and FSX. It connects through SimConnect for the Microsoft simulators and natively for X-Plane, and detects the running simulator automatically.
